In an Hour of Need

Perhaps the most anguished words of all scripture are those of Jesus when He was upon the cross and cried with a loud voice, saying: “My God, . . . why hast thou forsaken me?” Many a man in his hour of need and despair has felt even as this, and has wondered what he has done to deserve what has happened to him and has wondered where indeed is that God and Father of all who marks the fall of the sparrow and looks over all creatures with love and justice and mercy. To all who have at one time or another found themselves thinking such thoughts, perhaps it should be said that man sees things only as they now are and knows neither the beginning nor the end. Even as the motives of a parent may be misunderstood by the mind of a child, so does the wisdom of God transcend the thinking of man. Our Creator sees not only what is, but what has gone before and what shall follow. And having set our minds to an attitude of trust, we can find ourselves at peace, with courage to endure even unto the end. The fact is we are not forsaken, even though, at short range, it may sometimes seem so.
