Some Laws Too Seldom Considered…
October 20, 1968
In our concern for liberty, and law, and lawlessness, and what is of isn’t legal of moral of permissible, there sometimes seems to be too much complexity. The endless process of passing many laws, and the endless legal quibbling and contention suggest the need for something simpler – something too seldom considered – even something seldom if ever read of seldom heard by some – something such as the Ten Commandments. While they may not cover all the intricacies of modern life, they do provide the basic principles. “And the Lord God came down…and…called Moses up to the top of the mountain… And Moses went up we read and the Lord called unto him …saying:
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image…Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them nor serve them…
Thou shalt not take the mane of the Lord, thy God in vain…
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy
Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
Thou shalt not kill.
Thou shalt not steal.
Thou shalt not bear false witness….
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house… thy neighbors wife…nor anything that is thy neighbor’s
“And all the people answered together, and said, all that the Lord hath spoken we will do …lest we die.” IT is nowhere written that we know of, that these principles have been repeated, And despite all technicalities, all attempts to dispute, to dilute, to rationalize the law, these are the commandments God has given, and these—with others from the same source – would make a good place to begin to solve our problems, to heal the heartaches, to halt the violence, to clean out the clutter of an accusing conscience, and to quiet the sorrow in the lives of perplexed people. This is the counsel God has given.
